This looks like a promising series.
Jace is a FBI profiler who is magically transported from our world to a parallel earth where humans comprise only 1% of the population. The majority of the population is either vampire or some form of canine were with golems making up the rest.
The worlds apparently diverged over the creation of firearms. Guns are unheard of in Jace's new world. In fact, there's a powerful spell that keeps the inhabitants from even seriously considering guns and similar weapons.
Although the worlds diverged in the 12th century the parallel world has many of the same events as our world, but with a twist. There was still a World War I and II, for example. There were still concentration camps, but they were where humans were either turned into vampires or weres.
I enjoyed the world building and the twists on history and various cultures.
I liked the characters, too. Barant did a good job creating interesting characters and making the reader uncertain about who was trustworthy.
I'm looking forward to the next book.
