I really enjoyed this book. I'm not a huge fan of paranormal romance but Phoenix handled it well. I don't think there was a single character that really irritated me. I really liked both Layne and Valin. I'll be sad if Valin is actually gone in the next book.
The book is not without problems, however. There's a lot of dialect, the author seems ambivalent about whether magic is widely known and acknowledged; and Kallie has a lot of growing up to do. Seriously, it's not cool to just punch people when they annoy you and if the character was male it would never be allowed. Characters of either gender can be kickass without being abusive.
